Excursions

Local

Local people are friendly and very keen to develop tourism in their area. You will easily be able to organise your excursions through them. English language skills are limited but fully qualified translators are easily available at a modest price, if appropriate, especially during the summer holidays.

If you hire a local fisherman to row you across the Lake to bird watch or fish you will gain from his (or her) local knowledge as well as helping the boatman sustain his traditional and chosen lifestyle in a changing world.

Wages are low in Romania. Prices will seem remarkably cheap, but will be fair and sufficient to help improve local standards of living.

Local people will also arrange other excursions. Here are a few examples:

Somova is close to three monasteries, including Saonu, an active wine making monastery with a windmill (tastings and sales can be arranged).

Visiting all three monasteries might take half a day - but bird watchers would doubtless want to stay longer by the lakes at Celic-Dere in the hope of seeing the Lesser spotted Eagle, Short toed Eagle, Levant Sparrow Hawk Bee-eater, Roller and Hoopoe.

A half day trip to the historic town of Babadag could become a full day trip with a visit to Lake Razim to watch the Terns, Waders, Collared Pratincoles and White and Dalmatian Pelicans or a visit to Constanta, with its dolphinarium, zoo, aquarium and nearby beach resort of Mamaia. At Mamaia there is a fun fair and a fascinating village of houses in different regional styles, now operating as pubs and restaurants.

Tulcea is a modern city and the starting point for excursions into the Danube Delta. There is a pleasant riverside promenade and modern bars and restaurants. It is the place for an evening out at a restaurant or a half day trip taking in the Heroes monument with views over the city, the Danube Delta Museum and the archaeological museum.

An excursion into the heart of the Danube Delta should certainly be considered.

Across Romania

Romania is packed with amazing sightseeing and tourism opportunites, most of which remain undiscovered by the mass market. We recommend strongly that you take the time to extend your stay by experiencing some of the magnificent riches which this amazing country has to offer.  Visit our partner company Adventure Discovery for further information and reservations.

The magnificent city of Sighisoara is one example. Birthplace of Vlad the Impaler Dracula, the entire city is a UNESCO protected World Heritage area. This is arguably the best preserved medieval city in the world.

Bucharest, Romania’s capital, with its wide tree-lined boulevards and eclectic mix of architecture is home to numerous sightseeing opportunities, including the world’s second largest building (after the Pentagon), the Parliament Palace. The city also hosts some excellent and unusual museums, such as the open-air Village Museum.

The Painted Monasteries of Bucovina are truly unique and fascinating, with their incredible external frescoes - a real “Must-See”.

At the Royal Mountain Resort of Sinaia lies one of Europe’s most beautiful palaces, Peles, well worth a visit or why not head to the 14th Century Bran Castle, a spectacular and excellently preserved building, often described (inaccurately) as “Dracula’s” Castle, due to its remarkable resemblance to the spooky castles in Hollywood movies.

Why not try a “Dracula Tour”, taking in many of the country’s great sights and providing a great mix of history, legend and superstition.
